Verkerks

High Temperature Heat Pump

July 2012

PROBLEM

Ashburton Meat processors, a fully owned subsidiary of Verkerks were running at the limit of refrigeration capacity and were struggling to produce sufficient hot water. This, coupled with a hot water supply coming from an old and dirty light fuel boiler provided plenty of motivation for an upgrade.

SOLUTION

DETA's solution to the upgrade, a high temperature heat pump (HTHP) producing hot water at 70 degrees, a New Zealand first. Aided by a centralised ammonia-glycol refrigeration system, the HTHP is set to be cleaner and vastly more efficient than the old plant.

OUTCOME

As a result of installing the HTHP, there has been a 27% reduction in overall site energy consumption which equates to savings of $235,000. Carbon emissions have been halved and to top it off, the overall system had simple payback period of 2.5 years. The system also produces an abundance of hot water which provides extra savings and allows for future expansion.
