Back in November 2015, the majority of the team here at DETA completed in the individual Pegasus Classic Triathlon. It was a great event to compete in and everyone had a fun, challenging day. The triathlon consisted of a 500 m swim in Lake Pegasus, 15 km bike ride and 5 km run.
There was a lot of healthy banter in the office in the lead up to the big day, with plenty of talk about 500 m personal best swimming times, Hagley Park running times and cycling top speeds. Jeff definitely took out first place for talking up his strengths on the course! Lunch time swimming and running became common place at DETA in the weeks leading up to the triathlon and it was a good reason to get into shape before summer.
On race day, Jonathan, Jeff, Lucy and Eugene competed in the triathlon, while David and Michelle were on babysitting duty with the children (the bouncy castle was a big hit with the kids). The weather on the day of the race was overcast and damp at 8 am in the morning, but the lake temperature was surprising warm. The start of the swim felt like being in a washing machine as everyone jostled for position in the murky water. Everyone agreed that it felt a lot longer than 500 m! The bike course took the contestants on 3 laps around the lake and was a fast course with nice asphalt roads. After transition, the everyone ran two laps around Lake Pegasus, before crossing the finish line. After leading on the swim and bike, Jeff was pipped by Jonathon for line honours followed by a fast finishing Eugene and Lucy.
We all regrouped after the race for a well-deserved picnic by the lake, featuring plenty of sugary snacks to get the energy levels back up!
The next race day will be held on 27th November 2016 and we will definitely be entering again. We might see you there on the start line!
